New England banister back chair, Circa 1710-50, is in wonderful crazed old black paint with gilt pinstriping to accentuate the details. The finials flank a “rarest of the rare” original crest, done with a fan and scroll work. The rush seat is above a block and ring base with substantial, bold stretchers turned at the front. No major repairs.
Rural turners made creative gems like this chair as they were inspired the urban high style models which were most fashionable in the period.
