This type of lamp was discovered in the late 18th and early 19th century during excavations in ancient Italian cities such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were buried suddenly by volcanic material from Vesuvius. This fascinating type was then copied in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. These conveniently burned animal fat and other flammable liquids from the central font through wicks in the arms.
