Walnut and gilt side chair, 18th century, Portugal
Most likely from Portugal, this walnut side chair is 18th century in the rococo taste with distinctive leafage decoration in gilt on gesso. We have studied furniture in Portugal which often uses this bolder interpretation of the cabriole legs fashion. Legs are more massive and angular at the knees, often with ball and claw feet. Flourishes of gilding over gesso are a typical enhancement to carving. The seat is caned and would be used often with a loose cushion. This could be a point of interest at a desk or in a hallway.
