We sail into the new year with the Herat, an English ship painted by a British school painter in the mid to late 1800s. This is a very crisp, bright image with great detail of sailors and gear on deck. The work shows the talent of an academically trained artist. Blue sky is breaking through the clouds as the ship sails through blue-green ocean. A distant ship is on the horizon. Picture yourself with friends on deck! At last I have a boat without winter lay up costs.
Condition notes: Professionally cleaned some time ago, later stretcher bars, canvas relined, craquelure overall, scattered touch-ins. Set in a later classic gilt cove frame. This will be admired by all when over your mantle.
