Carved by a master, these side chairs reflect the finest American workmanship of the period. The arched crests hold a reserve of a palmette and bell flowers with a molded surround that continues around the back. The strapwork back is held at top and bottom by flutes leading to carved lunettes. At center, a rosette holds a molded cross brace below a drapery swag. The upholstered seats have rich yellow silk in a Chinese style tree peony design. This is a beautiful later fabric in estate condition.
The state of the wood and carving is the best I have seen on a set of this size with a rather breath-taking original finish that has, with ages, taken on a bronze-like tone, perfect for these sculptural works!
