The outstanding quality of this New York Hepplewhite sideboard circa 1785 is evident in these images. Fine joinery and inlay combine for the American look of simple elegance. A sideboard is a difficult object to master with a long rectangle above slender tall legs and this master achieved a beautiful resolution.
Astragal corners break up the long façade and graceful inlays of ovals show off the flame grained mahogany. The legs are line inlaid terminating in bracelets at the ankles. Importantly, the original oval brasses are still intact. Each is signed “HJ”, the mark of a prominent Birmingham, England maker. No major repairs.
Opportunity to own quality and a piece of American history.
