Little is seen of landscape painting in the 17th and 18th centuries. In America, romantic notions of the beauty of this new world are reflected in an interest in landscapes. The Hudson River Valley School of painters gains well deserved prominence in the mid to late 19th century with superb views done by many talented hands.
Shown here, is a mid 1800’s pleasant Hudson River view that we recently acquired. We are still hoping to find a signature. The original deep coved gilt frame is still intact adding a glow to the canvas.
