Ladies satinwood writing desk, ca. 1790

Small slant lid writing desk, circa 1790-1810.. Done in inlaid and painted satinwood, with a herringbone and banded rim, the lid is filled with a hand colored mezzotint, original to the piece, which depicts a mother and her daughter in classical dress. This was a typical theme in eglomise’ looking glass panels in the period. This image is special in that the mother is pulling her daughter away from the distraction of a fortune teller. The lid lifts to reveal a writing surface with compartments, all lined with faux marb papers. Unique and especially charming. H. 33″, w. 20″, d. 15″. $1500. |
