Another interesting recent French school discovery is pictured below. Typical of academic work, fine brushstrokes, and subtle glazes are used to give life and detail to her face. Her neoclassical costume of the 1800s takes inspiration from classical antiquity of ancient Greece and Rome.

She is holding an early musical instrument called a rebec. The introduction of the rebec into Western Europe coincided with the conquest of the Iberian peninsula. The rebec also became a favorite instrument in the tea houses of the Ottoman Empire.

The signature in the lower right is A. ZIENERT . Our young 19th century lady is standing against the background of trees and a quiet lake. Oil on canvas, restored and wax relined. Recent lavish gilt framing. $1650.
