Seldom do we encounter such an unusual piece, created by someone with great imagination and equal talent. We can only imagine that this was made for a special person ordered by someone of thought and some wealth.

Initially, appearing as a side table, the finest of work is displayed by a dark green leather top, with gilt embossing and cross banding in walnut. The aprons are paneled with light line inlay flanked by diamond forms and exotic woods. The legs are elegant, slender tapered legs with ebonized line stringing and blocking. They are further supported by a delicate bamboo form X stretchers. However, this was not enough for the buyer…

At back, is a sliding screen to deflect light or the heat of the fireplace. Then, the top lifts on a ratchet to adjust the angle of the writing or reading surface. At right is a convenient drawer with holders for inks and quills. At left, a concealed hand hold pulls to open the sewing bag of pleated silk. This was to store the day’s work out of view.

Beautiful condition with a nice polish over old finish. Silk recently replaced.

Height 30 inches, width 19 inches, depth 15 inches. Overall height of screen 43.75 inches.

$1350 is the price of a genius creation.
