British man o’ war returns to port in strong winds under reduced sail. This oil on canvas includes all of the treats we like including the pilot boat #10, a lighthouse, flags flying, a fort with cannons, a prominent painted figurehead, and distant ships. The main mast flies a pennant with the ship’s name on it, Sandb…, but not clearly. Old frame tags verso say “J. Beard, 1816”. A faint signature is in the lower right. The antique beveled frame has exotic veneer with gilt liner. Some craquelure, old restorations and not relined. 19th century. 34″ by 42″ overall. Enlargeable images on request.
