American Federal sofa in the Sheraton style is this week’s favorite local discovery. Dating about 1810-20’s, this piece was created at the height of elegance in this era. Often referred to a the golden era of furniture making, this sofa combines the best of design and furniture making skills.
Each bit of carving added represents additional cost to the prospective owner. The scrolled crest rests on molded serpentine arms terminating in scrolled hand holds having leafage and rosette carving. A delicately carved, reeded baluster supports this, sitting on a square plinth which hold the desirable elliptical seat. The legs are finely turned and reeded. the structure is sturdy and the correct period style cover is in neat usable condition.
